Emfizemul  este o afectiune pulmonara aparuta ca urmare a inflamarii micilor alveole pulmonare, ruperii peretilor dintre ele si formarea unor alveole largite (marite) cu tesut cicatrial. Acest lucru provoaca o rigiditate a plamanilor, si o micsorare a zonei din plamani prin care se poate absorbi oxigen.
